Turkey resumes rail links

06 August 2003
Turkey has resumed rail links with Iraq, Ankara's state rail authority announced on 6 August. A similar announcement was made by Syria in late July (MEED 30:7:03). Services in both directions will operate four times weekly and will transport humanitarian supplies and reconstruction materials. Ankara is keen to resume trade with Iraq and to play a wider role in reconstruction. The government is reported to be seeking a greater say in the post-war settlement from Washington in exchange for dispatching much-needed peacekeeping troops (MEED 24:7:03). Ankara estimates trade losses of $30,000 million from war-induced disruption. Exports of Iraqi oil through Turkey's Ceyhan terminal have yet to resume owing to damage to the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline. 'We are working on the pipeline,' said Adel al-Kazaz, head of the Northern Oil Company, on 6 August. 'We are dealing mostly with wear and tear. There is corrosion and we have some leaks.'
