Six key people behind the development of the new Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi airport: Majed al-Mansoori, James Bennett, Riad Kamal, Mustafa Sani Sener, Mohammed al-Rais and Samer Khoury

Majed al-Mansoori

Position: Chairman, Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac)

Biography: Majed al-Mansoori is the chairman of Adac, the client for the Midfield Terminal project. He was appointed to the position in June 2012. He is also the chairman of Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipal Affairs and a member of the Executive Council. After graduating with a bachelor of science degree in urban planning from Alabama A&M University in the US, Al-Mansoori began his professional career with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) in 1994. He served in various positions, including head of occupational hygiene. In 1999, al-Mansoori left Adnoc to become the secretary general of the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (ERWDA), which has since changed its name to the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD). Al-Mansoori remains a member of the executive committee of the EAD.

James Bennett

Position: Chief executive officer (CEO), Adac

Biography: James Bennett is the CEO of Adac, which he joined in June 2010 after 14 years with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA). Since 2003, Bennett had been the president and CEO of the American firm. He was responsible for planning, directing and managing strategy for Washington Dulles International and Ronald Reagan Washington National airports, and also for the Dulles Toll Road. Before joining MWAA, Bennett was the assistant aviation director at Sky Harbour International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona, where he oversaw operations, finance and planning, business affairs and maintenance. Bennett graduated with a bachelor’s degree in aviation management from US’ Auburn University in 1978. He has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Michigan, also in the US. He is an accredited airport executive with the American Association of Airport Executives.

Riad Kamal

Position: Founder and executive chairman, Arabtec Construction

Biography: Riad Kamal is the founder and executive chairman of Arabtec Construction and the CEO of Arabtec Holding. Arabtec is one of the contractors in the consortium awarded the main construction of the terminal. Kamal began his career in the construction industry in London in 1966. After a year of design work, he worked on construction projects in the UK, Spain and Jordan. From 1970 to 1974, he worked at UK-based Robert McAlpine Engineering & Contracting. In 1974, Kamal moved to Dubai and established Arabtec Construction, which became a listed firm in 2004. Arabtec currently employs more than 70,000 people and has been responsible for several major projects throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Kamal graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Imperial College London. He also has a master’s degree in structural engineering from the same university.

Mustafa Sani Sener

Position: President and CEO, TAV Airports Holding and TAV Construction

Biography: Mustafa Sani Sener is the president and CEO of Turkey’s TAV Aiports Holding and TAV Construction, one of the firms in the main contracting consortium. He has held this position since 1997. Before joining TAV, Sener worked for the local Sera Construction for 14 years. He was a project manager and general manager on various national and international construction projects, including housing developments, energy plants and roads. Sener graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Black Sea Technical University in Turkey in 1977. He followed this up with a master’s degree in fluid mechanics from the department of applied sciences at the University of Sussex in the UK. Sener was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Black Sea Technical University for his contributions to Turkish engineering at an international level.

Mohammed al-Rais

Position: Senior vice-president and managing director, Middle East, Hill International

Biography: Mohammed al-Rais is the senior vice-president and managing director, Middle East, for US-based Hill International. In August, Hill, along with US-based Aecom, was appointed to manage the construction of the Midfield Terminal. Al-Rais has been in his current role since 2010. Between 2007 and 2010, he served as the senior vice-president for Hill’s projects management group and was the group’s regional manager for Abu Dhabi during the same period. Before joining Hill, Al-Rais was the director of property development for Dubai International Properties, which is now known as Sama Dubai. He was a programme manager with the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation, where he oversaw the multibillion-dollar expansion of Dubai International airport. Al-Rais has a master’s degree in project management from the UK’s University of Reading.

Samer Khoury

Position: Executive vice-president of operations, Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC)

Biography: Samer Khoury is the executive vice-president of operations for Athens-based CCC, which is part of the main contracting consortium on the Midfield Terminal project. He has held the position since 1997. Prior to this, Khoury worked in various departments for CCC, which was founded by his father. Between 1987 and 1990, he was in charge of more than 1,000 permanent staff as head of operations for CCC in Kuwait. He moved to the firm’s head office in Athens in 1990. Khoury graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the US’ California State University in 1981. He also has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern California. He is a director of the Palestine Investment Fund, which aims to encourage investment in Palestine’s telecommunications, power, tourism, real estate and finance sectors.
