Five political activists in the UAE have sentences cut
The UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan has pardoned five political activists who had been sentenced to up to three years in prison for charges including insulting the country’s rulers.
The five were arrested in April after signing an online petition calling on UAE rulers to introduce direct elections and give parliament legislative powers. The trial had been widely criticised by human rights groups.
