UK Foreign Minister says war on Iraq 'not inevitable'

06 January 2003
UK Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs Jack Straw said in an interview with BBC Radio on 6 January that war with Iraq was not a foregone conclusion and was less likely than many commentators think.

'What is important for people to understand is that war is not inevitable,' he said. 'There has been so much talk in the newspapers about war, suggestions that the chancse of war are 100 per cent, that it's important to try and correct that impression.' Straw said the UK would prefer to see a second UN resolution passed before any onslaught on Iraq, but that the ball was in President Saddam Hussein's court.
