UN food aid passes 1 million tonnes

04 July 2003
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on 3 July announced that it had supplied in excess of 1 million tonnes of food to Iraq - enough to feed the population of Iraq for over two months.

'This is an unprecedented logistics operation for the WFP in terms of size and complexity,' said Amer Daoudi, in charge of WFP logistics for emergency operations in Iraq. It is the largest food aid operation in history, he said.

The WFP has increasingly been able to utilize the port of Umm Qasr since coalition forces secured it in May, which has led to reduced transportation costs. The project has also created numerous employment opportunities in Iraqi's in the southern port city.
