US citizen imprisoned for trading with Iraq

A court in Mannheim, Germany on 27 November sentenced an Iraqi-born US citizen to four years and nine months in prison for trading with the former regime of Saddam Hussein, reported AP. Abd al-Amir al-Haddad was arrested after German authorities discovered that he had organised a shipment of drills to Iraq in 1999 that could have been used to make illegal weapons..Al-Haddad, who holds a US passport but was living in Amman at the time of the deal, was put on trial in September after being accused of breaking German export laws and attempting to violate arms control regulations.

Another two men, both German nationals, were convicted of involvement in the same case on 31 January. One was sentence to five years and three months in prison and the other was given two years of probation.
