US column reported 90 miles into Iraq, Fao taken, fighting in Kirkuk

21 March 2003
Reporters embedded with the US-led coalition reported on 21 March that the US 3rd Infantry Division had advanced at least 90 miles into Iraq from Kuwait by early Friday and were heading towards Baghdad along a route to the west of the Tigris river. This is about quarter of the distance between the Kuwait border and Baghdad.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair confirmed earlier in the day that the Fao peninsula had been taken in an assault headed by British forces. There are reports of fighting in Kirkuk but no confirmation that the city had fallen to the coalition.
