Local power plant developer Mass Global Investment Company has awarded two contracts totalling $200m to the US’ General Electric (GE) to supply power generation equipment and services for two independent power projects (IPPs) in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

GE will supply four Frame 9E gas turbine units for the 500MW, simple-cycle power plant in Dohuk and two turbines to the plant in Sulaimaniyah, generating total capacity of 750MW.

Mass Global won a $480m contract to build the Dohuk plant in July 2009 (MEED 28:7:09).

The Dohuk and Sulaimaniyah plants are scheduled to begin operating commercially in the second half of 2010.

Mass Global has also completed work on Iraq’s first independent power project in Irbil province. The equipment and services contract for the plant, which also has capacity of 500MW, were similarly awarded to GE.  

Mass Global will sell power produced from the IPPs to the Kurdish Regional Government.
