US to build Iraqi naval facilities at Umm Qasr

19 February 2009
The Iraqi navy has approved plans for the construction of a $53m naval pier and seawall by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) at Iraq’s main deep sea port of Umm Qasr.

The USACE’s design for the project is close to completion and will provide a secure berthing facility for Iraqi navy vessels, although no schedule for completion of the work has yet been outlined.

US military sources say the port will play a critical role in supporting the navy’s protection of Iraq’s territorial waters and vital oil export facilities on the Gulf coast.

The project is the first foreign military sales scheme between Baghdad and the USACE.

Iraq recently issued tenders inviting foreign shipping companies to run three new berths at Umm Qasr’s commercial port (MEED 18:2:09).
