The UAE’s Utico has selected the US’ GE and Finland’s Wartsila to supply and install a 60MW power generation unit in the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah. The power plant will join an existing 40MW power plant at the same site, which was also built by Wartsila.

Utico is planning another power project in Ras al-Khaimah, which will have a capacity of 22MW of power and 5 million gallons per day of desalinated water. The project is currently in the planning stage. Utico has said that it has secured the land for the project and expects to commission the project within one year.

Power from Utico’s projects is sold to customers in eight industrial areas located around 75 kilometres from the power plants under concession agreements. In addition to the industrial activities, electricity is supplied to around 10,000 nearby housing units.

The projects are financed by Utico, which retains a majority shareholding in each of its projects. Other shareholders include industrial and private companies.
