National council to be formed to supervise digital transformation

Saudi Arabia has set out a target for at least 90 per cent of all residential units in its dense cities and 66 per cent elsewhere to be connected to a high-speed broadband network over the next 15 years, according to the Vision 2030 document.

To achieve this, the vision statement stated that a partnership with the private sector will be sought. ”We will be partnering with the private sector to develop the telecommunications and information technology infrastructure, especially high-speed broadband, expanding its coverage and capacity… and improving its quality.”

Vision 2030 stressed that a sophisticated digital infrastructure is integral in advanced industrial activities, and will contribute in attracting investors and ultimately enhancing the kingdom’s economic competitiveness.

The statement also alluded to developing building standards that will facilitate the adoption of broadband networks.

The statement addressed the need to establish a robust legislative framework to enable the establishment of sophisticated digital infrastructure. It said a national council will be formed to assist the kingdom’s digital transformation. “…We will improve our regulations and establish an effective partnership with telecom operators to better develop this critical infrastructure.”

Lastly, the statement indicated that the kingdom will support local investments in the telecommunications and information technology sectors.
