Vote to decide future of Kuwait’s oil minister

Al-Rashidi has rejected allegations of corruption and squandering public funds on megaprojects

A vote on 10 May will decide the future of Kuwaiti Oil Minister Bakheet al-Rashidi after ten members of Kuwait’s parliament submitted a motion to hold a no-confidence vote.

Al-Rashidi was questioned for 11 hours on 2 May. During the session, he was asked to respond to allegations of corruption and squandering public funds that was meant to be used to fund megaprojects.

Al-Rashidi rejected all allegations during the session and said all relevant megaprojects are proceeding to schedule.

Al-Rashidi was appointed as oil minister in December 2017.

Prior to becoming oil minister he was the CEO of Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI), a subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC).

KPI markets fuel, lubricants and other petroleum derivatives outside Kuwait. One of its main focus areas is Europe.

KPI has around 5,000 employees, sales exceeding 75 million litres a day and a net turnover of $10bn a year.
