Weir wins Kindasa desal deal

02 November 2002

The local Kindasa Water Serviceshas issued a letter of intent to the UK's Weir Westgarthfor an estimated $25 million contract to build its new private desalination plant in Jeddah. The contract is expected to be signed in early 2003 (MEED 8:3:02).

The project calls for the construction of a plant with capacity of more than 25,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d) of water, with the option to expand the plant later to about 34,000 cm/d. The project will also involve the installation of a pipeline between the plant and the industrial city, where all its customers are located.

Kindasa is the first private water company in the kingdom, providing something of a test case for larger independent water and power projects (IWPPs) planned elsewhere. Kindasa is 20 per cent owned by the Bushnak Group, which is also the main consultant on the scheme.
