Houston-based Wild Well Control has won a KD8m ($28.6m) contract from Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) to supply the state firm with emergency well services.
Under the terms of the five-year master services agreement, Wild Well will provide KOC with well control services in the event of a wellhead emergency such as a blow-out, as well as providing personnel and fire-fighting equipment.
The company will also be responsible for updating KOC’s blow-out contingency plan on an annual basis and assisting in relief well services if a blow-out is uncontrollable.
A blow-out is when oil, and particularly gas, is released to the surface in an uncontrolled way due to failings in safety systems. Because of the high speed and pressure of the released substance, it can cause extensive damage to the rig and the personnel operating it. It is often set on fire by nearby ignition sources.
If it remains uncontrollable, a relief well can be drilled to reduce the pressure and decrease the severity of the blow-out.
