Biography: The Ezz family name is synonymous with steel in Egypt, with their interests in the industry dating back to the 1970s.
In 1994, Ezz Steel Rebars (ESR) was founded, with Ahmed Ezz as chairman and managing director. Over the past 14 years, he has overseen the expansion of the business to become a major steel producer and exporter with an output capacity of 5.3 million tonnes a year (t/y).
The Ezz steel businesses in Egypt now consist of four plants producing rebar [reinforcement steel bars], wire rod, wire mesh and flat-steel products. The oldest and largest of these is Alexandria-based Ezz Steel Dekheila (EZDK), in which ESR acquired a controlling stake in 1999. In January, Ezz was awarded one of four licences to build a new mill in Egypt.
Ahmed Ezz is also a member of parliament, a position he has held since 2000. He has a degree in civil engineering from Cairo University.
