Position: Finance and economy minister
Biography: Ali Shareef al-Emadi has been appointed as Qatars new finance & economy minister, taking over from Yousef Hussain Kamal, who had served in the role since 1998. Al-Emadi comes to the post after working as group chief executive officer (CEO) of Qatar National Bank (QNB) since 2005, overseeing the expansion of the lender across the Middle East and North Africa region.
QNB is now the GCCs largest bank. Al-Emadi began his career in the banking control department of Qatar Central Bank. He joined QNB in 1998 and by the end of 2001 had become assistant general manager of the banks credit department.
In May 2005, Al-Emadi was made general manager for risk, a position he held for only three months before being promoted to head QNB as group CEO. Al-Emadi graduated with a degree in finance from the University of Arizona in the US.
