Avaya completes Nortel Enterprise acquisition

20 December 2009

Avaya has completed its take over of Nortel Enterprise Solutions, the enterprise arm of Nortel Networks, in a deal that makes it bigger than Cisco in the telephony market. The acquisition - $900m for the company and $15m for employee retention - gives Avaya added scale, resources and expertise, the company said. It is also expected to be the forerunner to Avaya's private equity owners Silver Lake and TPG capital either selling the company or pushing through an IPO. Around 6,000 Nortel staff have joined Avaya, including 25 senior managers. Joel Hackney, previously President, Nortel Enterprise Solutions, is now Senior Vice President and President, Avaya Government Solutions and Data. This is the latest business unit that its bankrupt former parent, Nortel Networks has sold.
