Airport undergoing $1.1bn modernisation programme

The Bahrain Airport Company is seeking firms to prequalify for the contract to build a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hangar at the Bahrain International airport.

Submission of prequalification documents closes on 22 February.

The facility is part of the airport’s $1.1bn modernisation programme.

The main contract for the construction of a new terminal was awarded to a team comprising the UAE’s Arabtec Construction and Turkey’s TAV in early 2016.

Specialist systems such as passenger air bridges, baggage-handling machines, moving walkways, and security packages have also been awarded.

Apart from the MRO hangar, the packages still to be awarded include airport access roads, jet fuel farm, hydrant and station, air traffic control centre facility, and the airport information and communication technology (ICT) system.

France’s ADPI has been selected for the air traffic control centre package although the formal award letter has yet to be signed.

When completed in 2020, the expanded terminal at Bahrain International will have an annual passenger capacity of 13.5 million. Funding for the terminal expansion construction is being provided by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).
