Al-Rayadah Investment Company awarded the contract to Saudi Oger who then subcontracted it to Bombardier

Canada’s Bombardier has won a $241m deal to build, operate and maintain Riyadh monorail project in Saudi Arabia.

The monorail will be 3.6 kilometres long and will be used to transport people around the under-construction King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in Riyadh.

The local Al-Rayadah Investment Company awarded the contract to Saudi Oger in April who then subcontracted Bombardier to carry out the work.

Al-Rayadah Investment Company is the investment arm of the Public Pension Agency of the government of Saudi Arabia.

The network will have six driverless Innovia monorail 300 trains and 12 cars. The monorail system will also involve the construction of six stations.

Bombardier will now start carrying out the engineering, design and manufacturing of the trains. Bombardier and Saudi Oger will provide operation and maintenance services for the network for an initial period of 10 years.

The monorail is expected to be complete in 2012.

King Abdullah Financial District is the new finance and business development underway in Riyadh. In May, Saudi Binladin Group secured $3.9bn financing for the construction of the project (MEED 3:5:10).
