The project is the country’s newest public-private-partnership (PPP) scheme for the wastewater sector.
The PPP Central Unit within the Finance Ministry is currently carrying out technical due diligence on the project, according to the director of the unit, Rania Zayed.
Under the scheme, the capacity of Abu Rawash plant will be increased from 1.2 million cubic metres a day (cm/d) to 2 million cm/d. The project will also increase the level of treatment at the plant from primary to secondary.
The private developer will design, construct, finance, operate and maintain the wastewater treatment plant before transferring it back to the ministry when the 25-year long contract expires.
The ministry is already going ahead with PPP wastewater schemes in New Cairo and 6 October (MEED 16:2:08).
