EXCLUSIVE: Contractors selected for Maker's District pre-construction services

07 May 2018
Firms working on the project are expected to be awarded main construction works in coming months

Contractors have been awarded two pre-construction services contracts for the estimated AED2bn ($545m) Maker’s District project on Reem Island in Abu Dhabi.

The UK’s Kier has been awarded package one, and the local Khansaheb Civil Engineering has been awarded package two. Contractors are tendering for package three.

The pre-construction services contracts are part of a two-stage tender process and it is expected that the contractors selected for the pre-construction services contracts will be awarded main construction contracts in the coming months.

The Maker’s District is a waterfront scheme that comprises a mix of residential, hospitality, commercial and retail space spread across an area of 180,000 square metres of land.

Once complete, it will have more than 1,000 residential units, 11,000 square metres of commercial and retail space. The scheme is scheduled for completion in 2020.

The scheme is being developed by Imkan, which is a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Capital Group (ADCG).

In September 2017, Denmark’s Ramboll was appointed as the lead consultant for the first phase of the Makers District. Ramboll will provide lead consultancy services on the first phase of Makers District, working alongside architects Denmark’s BIG and MVRDV of the Netherlands.
