Attacks appear co-ordinated

Seven people have been killed and around 35 injured in two co-ordinated attacks in Tehran, which have been claimed by the Islamic State.

Five people were killed when gunmen fired several rounds inside the Iranian parliament building this morning.

One of the assailants eventually detonated himself inside Iran’s national legislative body, the Majlis-e Shoura.

Two persons were killed and and ten wounded after a suicide bomber blew himself outside the shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini south of Tehran.

An assailant was killed in the attack, another committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule to evade capture, while the third - a female attacker - has been captured, according to Fars News Agency.

The attacks took place at the same time. Iranian intelligence said that three possible attacks across various parts of the capital Tehran had been foiled.

Two revolutionary guards were among those killed in the parliament attack. Ten civilians representing different constituencies were among those injured.

An armed attacker managed to escape from the parliament house but was captured while on the run, local media reported.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the authenticity of the claim is disputed.

Iran has not witnessed a terrorist attack in recent years. The extremist Sunni Islamic State has long considered Shia Iran as infidel but has not managed to orchestrate an attack on the Islamic Republic.
