A key person driving the development of Oman’s tourism sector

Khamis bin Mubarak al-Alawi

Position: Transport & Communications Minister

Biography: Khamis bin Mubarak al-Alawi was appointed Transport & Communications Minister in September 2007.

Al-Alawi is overseeing a significant expansion of the country’s infrastructure, which includes the development and expansion of the sultanate’s aviation facilities and road network. In addition to the expansion and modernisation of Muscat International airport, the Transport Ministry is pushing ahead with plans for three new airports at Ras al-Hadd, Duqm, and Sohar.

Oman is also investing heavily in improving its roads network in an effort to develop its tourism sector. In the 2010 budget, the government allocated about OR1.7bn ($4.4bn) towards building roads.

Prior to his current position, Al-Alawi was Housing, Electricity & Water Minister for three years, having moved in May 2004 from heading up the Regional Municipalities, Environment & Water Resources Ministry.
