Kuwait's Public Works Ministry has delayed the bid deadline for a contract covering the operation and maintenance of the Riqqa wastewater treatment plant to 7 June from the original deadline of 24 May.
The ministry has prequalified 20 companies for the scheme.
The Riqqa wastewater treatment plant was built in 1981 with capacity of 85,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d).
In 2001, the ministry expanded capacity to 180,000 cm/d.
The ministry plans to eventually replace capacity at Riqqa by expanding an existing 27,000-cm/d plant at Umm al-Hayman.
The ministry has awarded the consultancy contract on the project to Leabanon's Dar al-Handasah (Shair & Partners).
The scheme will increase capacity at Umm al-Hayman to at least 300,000 cm/d.
The ministry may extend the plant's capacity further to 500,000 cm/d by 2020.
At that time, the ministry will decommission the Riqqa facility and convert it into a data monitoring centre (MEED 6:4:09).
