Kuwait University receives bids for construction tender

India’s Shapoorji Pallonji is lowest of six bidders for Kuwait University contract

India’s Shapoorji Pallonji has submitted the lowest bid low for a construction contract for Kuwait University’s new Sabah al-Salem University campus in Shadidiyah.

The campus is being developed to gather all the university’s faculties, which are spread across the capital, on to one site. The campus will be co-educational and able to accommodate up to 30,000 students. It will have more than 25 faculty buildings, as well as a 600-bed hospital for the medical faculty.

The tender covers the construction of the colleges of social sciences, law and Islamic studies. The work also includes associated buildings, such as a food court, prayer hall, libraries and a car park.

The deadline for submitting bids had been extended several times after initially being set at 8 October. The university had prequalified 22 consortiums to bid for the project.

The following companies submitted bids for the tender, which was issued on 29 December:

  • Sharpooji Pallonji (India) – KD149.9m ($530.3m)
  • SEG International Contracting (Lebanon) - KD161m
  • Arabtec Construction (UAE) – KD172.4m
  • Al Habtoor Leighton (UAE) – KD175.8m
  • Sinohydro (China) – KD180.2m
  • China State Construction Engineering Corporation (China) – KD196.6m
