Constitutional court ruled elections results were illegal

Thousands of Kuwaitis have staged demonstrations outside the National Assembly building, protesting against the constitutional court ruling which annulled the country’s February election results.

Approximately 20,000 people, including numerous parliamentarians, stood in the heat opposite parliament, according to local media reports, in what has been dubbed “Determination Square”.

Kuwait’s constitutional court ruled on 21 June that the February elections were illegal, dissolving parliament and reinstating the body elected in 2009, which had been previously dissolved by Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah in December 2011.

Opposition parliamentarians (MPs) from the now dissolved parliament have increased calls for constitutional reform. While they have accepted the ruling annulling the elections, but insist they will not accept the revival of the previous assembly, as many of its members are accused of corruption.
