Mecca Cola to open plant in Dubai

14 August 2003
Mecca Cola is to open its first oversees production and bottling facility in Dubai, the company announced 14 August. The new plant will be in Jebal Ali, and will cost AED 25 million ($6.8 million). It will produce about 384,000 cans a day.

The new plant will be Mecca Cola's second. Its first is in France, where the holding company is based. The new factory in the region will allow the company to pursue a 10 per cent market share in the Gulf, said a Mecca Cola official.

'Our intention is to go to the whole [Gulf] market at once, and the pricing will be similar to those cola brands which are already there,' said Ibrahim Khoory, general manager of Gallery Food & Beverages, which represents Mecca Cola in the UAE. Distributors have been selected for each market in the region.

The Gulf market accounts for about 300 million boxes of soft drinks a year. Mecca Cola was started by France-based Tawfik Mathlouthi as alternative to the leading brands of cola drinks (MEED 31:8:01).
