The decarbonisation of the Middle East economy is in its infancy. But there is no doubt it is set to reshape business in the region in the coming decades.

The January 2021 issue of MEED Business Review turns the spotlight on the initiatives under way in the Middle East and North Africa to cut carbon dioxide emissions and reduce carbon intensity.

Winning the decarbonisation battle will require a policy-led approach, and abandoning energy subsidies will be key. Read more on the region's participation in the global shift towards greater decarbonisation in the Agenda section here

In current affairs, MEED turns to the Western Sahara region, where clashes between Moroccan troops and Sahrawis demanding independence, and the US’ surprise recognition of Rabat’s position, have renewed the focus on this often overlooked part of the world.

This month's exclusive 15-page Market Focus, meanwhile, offers a comprehensive look at Kuwait, which is facing the results of a hesitancy to think big on diversification to escape its oil dependence.

The combined impact of the Covid-19 crisis and low oil prices on Kuwait’s economy, together with years without major fiscal or structural reform, have left the country's new emir and cabinet with some serious challenges.

Finally, don't miss this month's opinion column on artificial intelligence and its potential to divide the region. As technology enables humans to be replaced by robots in the labour force, inequality will grow in the Middle East, argues former MEED editor Edmund O'Sullivan.
