Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has awarded local firm Nesma Infrastructure & Technology (NIT) two contracts to design, build and commission two power transmission substations in Trojena, a mountain destination 50 kilometres from Saudi Arabia's Gulf of Aqaba coast.

The contracts are valued at approximately SR800m ($213m). The project duration is 20 months.

The scope includes the provision of overhead transmission lines connecting the substations to the national electricity grid.

Saudi Arabia will host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at Trojena.

Once complete, Trojena will be home to the Gulf’s only outdoor skiing venue. Its altitude ranges between 1,500 and 2,600 metres offering a cooler climate year round.

It will also be the location of  The Vault, a tourism development that will be built vertically inside a hollow mountain that will fold in on itself. The Vault will be 198 metres high, 253 metres wide and 864 metres long. The total surface area of the project is 200,000 square metres.

In December 2022, US-based Bechtel won a contract to provide project management consultancy services for the Trojena development.

Trojena dams

In April, Neom awarded the first Trojena contracts. Saudi Arabia-based Al-Ayuni Investment & Contracting won contracts for earthworks and the construction of access roads for the Trojena dams scheme.

The three dams, which together could cost about $2bn to complete, will be used to create the central lake at the mountain resort.

Al-Ayuni is also one of the three contractors engaged by Neom on an early contractor involvement basis to work on the Trojena dams project.
