Joint venture awarded project management contract for Doha Metro

A joint venture of US-based Louis Berger and France’s Egis Rail has been awarded a $79m project management and consultancy contract for all elevated and at-grade sections of the Doha Metro.

The scope of the work covers the red line north, red line south and green line, which have a combined length of approximately 16 km.

The Louis Berger Egis Rail Joint Venture was awarded a contract in August 2012 to provide project management consulting services on major underground sections, including the gold line and major stations.

In 2013, the joint venture was also contracted to provide independent certification engineer services, which covered early enabling works along with utility diversions.

It is also understood that a consortium made up of Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Corporation, Hitachi and Kinki Sharyo, as well as France’s Thales has received a letter of conditional acceptance from the Qatar Railway Company for the systems package of the Doha Metro.

In March 2014, a $700m contract to build a section of the metro’s Red Line South was awarded to a consortium of Spain’s FCC, Geneva-registered Archirodon Construction, Turkey’s Yuksel, and the local Petroserv

The Doha Metro, which is due for completion in 2019, will comprise a 211-kilometre network with 85 stations. Qatar Rail has also said the project is likely to provide jobs for 20,000 employees at peak construction.
