SBG/Oger vie for Jeddah

29 August 2006

The General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) has received bids from two local contractors for the design-and-build terminal facilities upgrade package at King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah. An award is expected by the end of September (MEED 28:7:06).

Saudi Binladin Group and Saudi Oger submitted four alternative prices covering the upgrade and expansion of the existing north, south and hajj terminals. The contract is valued at SR 600 million-900 million ($160 million-240 million). A third company, Almabani General Contractors, declined to bid.

The terminal upgrade package is the latest to be tendered at the airport. Almabani was recently awarded the SR 920 million ($245 million) airport facilities upgrade contract on the estimated $1,500 million KAIA expansion programme.

GACA is due to receive bids by mid-September for the contract to provide project and construction management (PCM) services on the expansion and for the build-operate-transfer (BOT) concession covering the proposed expansion of the Hajj terminal.

Bids are also due on 7 October for the BOT concession to supply and install a 30,000-cubic-metre-a-day desalination plant to serve the airport (MEED 14:7:06). NACO of the Netherlands completed a review of the original airport masterplan.
