Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum

Position :Chairman, Dubai Airports

Biography: Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum is the chairman of Dubai Airports, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Emirates Group, and president of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority. He has spearheaded Dubai’s rapid growth into a global travel hub with one of the world’s busiest airports for international passenger and cargo traffic.

Sheikh Ahmed began his career in the aviation industry in 1985, when he was appointed president of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation, the governing body that oversaw the activities of Dubai International airport. Under his leadership, the aviation authority went through a restructuring in April 2007, which resulted in the creation of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority as the local regulatory body and Dubai Airports as the owner and operator of the emirate’s airports.

Sheikh Ahmed has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Denver in the US.

Position: President, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority; chairman, Emirates Airline & Group

Biography: Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum holds several senior positions in Dubai’s government, including president of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA), and is chairman of Emirates Airline & Group.

Under his leadership, Emirates has become one of the world’s largest airlines since its launch in 1985 as a regional carrier. Sheikh Ahmed also became chairman of Emirates Group’s budget airline, Flydubai, when it launched in 2009.

As DCAA president, Sheikh Ahmed oversaw the opening of Dubai World Central - Al-Maktoum International airport in 2010 and Dubai International airport’s Terminal 3 in 2008. Sheikh Ahmed has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the US’ University of Denver, Colorado. He is also a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum

Position: Chairman, Supreme Fiscal Committee

Biography: Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum is chairman of the Supreme Fiscal Committee, which oversees Dubai’s financial policies and is in charge of deciding state support for debt-laden firms. In this role, Sheikh Ahmed will be responsible for approving or denying applications for government support in 2012.

As chairman of Dubai’s largest bank, Emirates NBD, he will also be instrumental in arranging support from the private sector to refinance debts. In 2010, Sheikh Ahmed was appointed chairman of Dubai World, the investment firm that had to restructure $25bn of financial obligations in 2009.

He is also chairman of Emirates Group (which includes Emirates airline), president of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and second vice-president of Dubai Economic Council. Sheikh Ahmed is the uncle of Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.
