04 March 2004
Dubai will soon be ready to host the Olympic Games, according to Dubai Development & Investment Authority chairman Mohammad al-Gergawi. 'The United Arab Emirates is ready, via the Dubai Sports City, to hold the Olympics,' al-Gergawi said at the unveiling of plans for a $2,000 million sporting complex, scheduled for completion in 2007. Reports say the emirate is considering a bid for the 2016 Games.

The development will cover an area of 50 million square feet and include a Manchester United football school, a golf course designed by South African professional Ernie Els, a tennis centre, a field hockey arena, a cricket stadium, and a football, rugby and athletics complex.

Dubai is already home to several major sporting events including golf's Desert Classic tournament, the Dubai Tennis Championships and horse racing's richest contest, the Dubai World Cup.
