Biography: Tarek Amer, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, has overseen the growth of NBE into Egypt’s largest bank by assets. Under Amer, the government-controlled NBE has embraced the financial supermarket model, offering services to retail and corporate customers, ranging from investment banking and consumer credit to mortgage lending and stock brokerage.
Amer has prior experience in investment banking at Bank of America and Citibank, both from the US. He was also a deputy chairman at Arab International Bank. Amer led efforts to help Egypt’s economy recover from the fallout of the Arab Uprisings. In August, he was instrumental in securing a $200m loan from China Development Bank to help NBE inject liquidity into small and medium-sized enterprises during the economic slowdown in Egypt.
