Tripoli in $1.5bn plan to modernise airports

The Civil Aviation Authority's $1,500 million programme to modernise the country's airports will adopt the International Air Transport Association code A design, which allocates the largest area per passenger.

It is planning new terminals at Tripoli, Benghazi and Sebha airports. The CAA projects that by 2030, Tripoli International Airport will handle 8 million passengers a year up from 2 million at present. In addition, 5 million will pass through Benghazi Airport and 2 million through Sebha. In 2006, traffic at Tripoli International Airport grew by 22 per cent.

An estimated LD 75 million ($58 million) turnkey contract covering air traffic control, 3D radar and communications is being carried out by Spain's Indra and should be completed by the end of 2009.
