
Six key executives involved in commodity trading in Dubai: Ahmed bin Sulayem, Paul Boots, Peter Meeus, Franco Bosoni, Malcolm Wall Morris and Gary Anderson
Ahmed bin Sulayem
Position: Executive chairman, Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC),
Biography: Ahmed bin Sulayem has been the executive chairman of DMCC since 2007 and is also the chairman of the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange (DGCX). Bin Sulayem was a key figure in DMCC’s development and under his leadership, the Jumeirah Lakes Towers [JLT] freezone in Dubai has become the region’s leading hub for commodities trading. His achievements include establishing the Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE) and the Dubai Pearl Exchange. Bin Sulayem began his career as a director for local property management firm Asteco in 2000. He then joined DMCC as director, before being promoted to chief operating officer in 2002. Bin Sulayem became vice-president of DDE in 2006 and then the executive chairman of DMCC and chairman of DGCX in 2007. He graduated from the California State University in the US in 2000.

Paul Boots
Position: Director, DMCC Tradeflow
Biography: Paul Boots is the director of DMCC Tradeflow, a central registry for inventory ownership in the UAE, which gives warehouses the ability to issue warrants that represent ownership of stored commodities electronically. Boots began his career as an analyst at Belgium’s Euroclear Bank in 2004, before becoming an account manager in 2005. In 2006, he joined International Diamond Laboratories, a DMCC diamond certification initiative, as manager of its Antwerp office. In this position, Boots played a key role in Dubai’s transformation into one of the world’s top three diamond trading centres by attracting some of the biggest traders from Antwerp to the firm’s Almas Tower in JLT. He spearheaded the Dubai Pearl Auction in 2010, the first event of its kind in the emirate. Boots has a bachelor’s degree in finance, management and economics from Babson College in the US.

Peter Meeus
Position: Chairman of the board of directors, DDE
Biography: Peter Meeus has been the chairman of the board of directors of DDE since 2009. DDE is a subsidiary of DMCC and is the first diamond bourse in the region. Meeus began his career as chief of staff for the governor of Antwerp in Belgium, before joining diamond brokerage firm Bonas & Co in 1990. He later became director of the Antwerp Diamond Bourse in 1992. In 1999, Meeus moved on to become managing director for HRD, an umbrella organisation for the Belgium world diamond centre. He remained in the position for six years, during which the HRD certificate’s market share increased by almost 400 per cent. Meeus then became executive director for diamonds at DMCC and was responsible for the centre’s masterplan for Dubai’s diamond sector. He graduated with a master’s degree in law from the University of Antwerp in Belgium in 1985.

Franco Bosoni
Position: Director, DMCC Commodity Services
Biography: Franco Bosoni is the director of commodity services at DMCC, a position he has held since 2011. Bosoni began his career as a consultant for US-based Monitor Group in 2005, assisting clients mainly in North America and the GCC. He provided advisory services across a wide range of industries including pharmaceuticals, speciality chemicals, financial services and construction. In 2008, Bosoni joined DMCC as strategy and planning manager, helping to drive its corporate strategy and performance management framework. He moved into his current role in 2011, managing DDE and the Dubai Pearl Exchange. Bosoni is responsible for the administration and development of DMCC’s precious metals initiatives, which include the Dubai Good Delivery Standard for gold and silver refining, the Visions of Dubai and UAE bullion gold coins, as well as DMCC’s Precious Metals Conference.

Malcolm Wall Morris
Position: Chief executive officer, DMCC
Biography: Malcolm Wall Morris became chief executive officer of DMCC in 2009 and has more than 16 years’ experience in the physical commodity and exchange sectors. Morris began his career as a coffee trader based in Paris and London in 1994. In January 2000, he became vice-president of business development for the UK-based Egreencoffee.com, where he pioneered the first online business-to-business for global coffee trading. Morris joined Euronext Liffe in 2001 as product manager for coffee and options and was later promoted to business development manager. By 2005, he was promoted to head of business development of commodity products. Morris joined DMCC in 2007 as the chief executive officer of DGCX, which he managed to consolidate as the region’s main derivatives exchange for commodities and currencies.

Gary Anderson
Position: Chief executive officer, DGCX
Biography: Gary Anderson is the chief executive officer of DGCX and has more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry. Anderson began his career in 1981 as a broker for the UK’s Drexel Burnham Lambert, working on the London commodity exchange trading floors. He joined the US’ Goldman Sachs in 1986 and worked his way up to become an executive director. Anderson was appointed European head of global exchange services for Germany’s Deutsche Bank in 1997 with responsibility for all aspects of its European futures and options business. In 2001, he became chief operating officer for the global exchange services and in 2003, co-headed a joint venture between this division and the foreign exchange division. Before joining DGCX, Anderson was a founding partner at UK-based Triniti Financial Group, which provides a trading environment and financial backing for day trading.
