The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has chosen the name ‘Burj 2020’ for the upcoming world’s tallest commercial tower in honour of Dubai’s Expo 2020 win.

The naming of the “Burj 2020” follows DMCC’s announcement earlier this year to build the tower in the Jumeirah Lakes Towers community as part of the free zone’s expansion plans.

The master plan for the ‘Burj 2020’ is currently in its final stages. Architects are to be appointed in 2014, with ground breaking planned for 2015. DMCC said it will be engaging with partners and stakeholders such as the Dubai Municipality, the Roads and Transport Authority and the Dubai Electricity and Water Association, in early 2014 to ensure a successful and timely delivery of the ‘Burj 2020’ and the DMCC Business Park.

The height of the new tower will be kept a secret until the grand opening of the building, Ahmed bin Sulayem, executive chairman of DMCC, told MEED in July. He said demand from potential tenants could lead to the height of the building being adjusted upward during the building phase. “We will build it as high as the market pushes it,’ he said.

Bin Sulayem emphasised that besides helping to meet growing demand for office space in JLT, the new tower would be a key selling point in Dubai’s efforts to gain the winning bid for the World Expo 2020, especially given the multi-national nature of the DMCC.
