EXCLUSIVE: Client plans to award metro extension packages in 2019

Project client likely to prioritise Doha Metro Red Line North extension due to the 2022 Fifa World Cup

Packages for the Doha Metro Red Line North extension are expected to be awarded before the last quarter of 2019, a source familiar with the project tells MEED.

The packages are understood to include track works and electromechanical systems in addition to the civil works contract for the metro station in Al-Khor, which will link with the Al-Bayt stadium that is being built for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

MEED understands the track and systems works will extend 27 kilometres from the under-construction Red Line North to the planned metro station in Al-Khor.

In September, MEED reported that Qatar Rail, the project client, had completed the technical interviews with bidders for the contract to build the Al-Khor metro station.

The groups that submitted bids for the Al-Khor metro station contract in July include:

  • FCC (Spain) / Consolidated Contractors Company (Lebanon)
  • Porr (Austria) / HBK Contracting (local) / Midmac (local)
  • Rizzani de Eccher (Italy) / Redco International (local)
  • Salini Impregilo (Italy) / SK Engineering & Construction (South Korea)
  • Yapi Merkezi (Turkey) / STFA (Turkey) / Al-Jaber Engineering (local)

In July, it was also announced that Turkey’s Tekfen Construction had won a contract for the metro's Red Line North extension scheme.

MEED understands the Red Line North extension track follows the same alignment as the $2.1bn Al-Khor Expressway, which Tekfen won in 2016. The expressway is expected to be completed in 2019.

Qatar Rail also plans to extend the Doha Metro Green Line. It received bids in December last year.

However, it is highly likely that Qatar Rail will prioritise the Red Line North extension scheme over the Green Line extension due to the upcoming Fifa World Cup, a source familiar with the scheme tells MEED.

Qatar Rail has yet to award the project management services contract that covers both schemes.

The client received bids for the PMC contract in April, following the incorporation of the Red Line North extension into the Green Line extension PMC package.
