Team of Italian, Turkish and local contractors wins South Al-Mutlaa package
A team of Italys Salini, Turkeys Limak Construction and local contractor Yousef Yahya Almatrouk has won a $956m contract for the construction of major roads and infrastructure at South Al-Mutlaa City in Kuwait.
The scope of work includes the construction, completion and maintenance of roads, highways and associated works.
The project owner is Kuwaits Public Authority for Housing Welfare (PAHW).
The scheme is the second major deal secured by Limak in Kuwait within eight days. Limak and its local partner Kharafi National were awarded a $4.3bn contract for Kuwait International airports Terminal 2 on 30 May.
In May, the US Hill International was selected to undertake the project management consultancy (PMC) for the South Al-Mutlaa City development, which is envisaged to become Kuwaits first greenfield smart city scheme.
Hill, along with Canadas WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff, lead consultant for the project, is expected to integrate smart city elements into the development.
Naser Khraibut, PAHW director of planning, told MEED in February that discussions on the nature of smart city integration into the development will commence as soon as the PMC contract was awarded.
South Al-Mutlaa City will occupy a 104 square-kilometre area in Kuwaits Jahra governorate, to the west of the capital Kuwait City.
Once completed in 2019, South Al-Mutlaa City will have 30,000 housing units and a population projected to reach 400,000. This would comprise about 9 per cent of the countrys projected population of nearly 4.6 million by 2019, according to the Washington-based IMF.
