Qatar airport package award expected soon

Evaluation of commercial and technical offers has been completed

Qatar is expected to award the contract for the QR600m ($164m) multi-level car park at the Hamad International Airport soon.

A source familiar with the project confirmed that the technical and commercial evaluation of the offers submitted by the bidders in May 2016 has already been completed.

It is understood that the contract to be awarded to the selected bidder is awaiting final approval from the newly-formed Hamad International Airport (HIA) Steering Committee.

“The formal award could take place be within a few weeks,” the source tells MEED.

The car park structure will have a ground floor level, two above-ground floors and rooftop parking. Altogether the gross floor area will be about 156,000 square metres, which will create enough space to park 3,200 vehicles.

More construction work is planned at Hamad International as part of its expansion programme.

The tender for the expansion of the main terminal will be released very soon, Akbar al-Baker, group CEO at Qatar Airways and vice-chairman of the HIA Steering Committee, said earlier this month as he confirmed the budget for the expansion has been approved by the government. The immediate plan involves expanding the airport capacity to 60 million passengers a year.

Apart from the expansion of the main terminal building, other plans include the construction of concourse D and E and the connection with the Red Line of the Doha Metro.

There is also a tentative plan to build a temporary bus gate terminal that will accommodate airport shuttle buses that transfer passengers from parked planes to the arrival hall and vice versa.
